Hi friend,
Lately, I have been extremely conflicted. It's been confusing to feel unbridled joy because more than half of adult Americans have gotten their first dose of the vaccine while knowing nearly 567,000 Americans have died. It's confusing to feel hopeful learning that states have passed more than 140 bills to change police policy since George Floyd's murder. Still, every week there is another instance of gun violence and police brutality, misconduct, and mass shooting. I've never felt more comfortable and proud being in my brown skin, but I've never in my life felt more afraid for my physical safety because of it. And every day, on top of this awareness, I proudly watch my investment accounts grow while so many people struggle just to get by.
Maybe one person's sorrow does not rob another of their joy, but today and for many days, I think the lesson I’m going to learn is how to take the bitter with the sweet. It’s not a tidy prescription, but sometimes the work is to feel our way through these conflicts sincerely. The older I get, the more I believe that much of the human experience is to allow ourselves to dwell in the duality of things. Do you?
Your favorite finance friend,
Paco

1. 🤓 How to Have a Better Relationship with Money (HYG Original from the Archive) Thought we'd resurface this one from the archives, as Gaby says in the comments, "Thank you for this. Having a GOOD relationship with money is a process. Yes, there are many how-tos but if your mentality doesn't change none of that matters" We couldn't agree more! 🤓

5. 🇨🇳 The Rise of Made-in-China Diplomacy (The New Yorker) While political leaders trade threats, the pandemic has made Americans even more reliant on China’s manufacturers.
6. 🏳 In Defense of Doing Nothing (New Republic) “Welfare reform was never about actual work, or creating real value, or tangibly improving people’s lives; it was about punishment and deprivation. It was also, like so much of our “hustle culture” today, about separating the virtuous from the sinful, using output and a certain kind of empty productivity as a gauge.”
7. 📺 Influencers Are the New Televangelists (New York Times) “The whole economy of Instagram is based around us thinking about our selves, posting about our selves, working on our selves.”
8. ☝🏽 Lizzo Says Doing One Act of Anti-Racism Every Day Is ‘the New Bare Minimum’ (Glamour) “You have to do an intentional act of anti-racism every single day,” she says, and helps those new to the work understand her meaning, continuing, “What’s an intentional act of anti-racism? Well, have you donated to bail out a protestor? Have you bought from a Black business? An Asian business? Have you bought from any person of color today? Have you seen someone getting harassed for the color of their skin and intentionally went over there and stopped it? Have you educated yourself?”
